The Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts is an arts and research center established as part of the Digital Exchange - a digital media initiative at Ball State University’s Center for Media Design funded by Lilly Endowment, Inc.
The institute is an interdisciplinary, collaborative research and studio environment that explores intersections between art and technology. Students, faculty, and industry partners engage in a wide range of innovative digital media projects employing technologies such as virtual reality, visualization, simulation, human computer interface, and interactive art works. Students, faculty and staff from the College of Fine Arts, College of Architecture and Planning, Information Technology and other disciplines take part in this experiential, project-based learning center - a digital studio environment that immerses students in the production of innovative digital media projects and connects them to regional, national and international partners. The centerpiece of the Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts is an immersive seminar in virtual worlds that provides students an experiential, project based learning environment investigating the forefront of discourse in emerging media.
Las Americas
On November 10, the Las Americas Network held the grand opening of its Virtual Design Studio. The event unveils the studio, designed by CAP student Brandon Hoopingarner and created in Second Life by students in the IDIA Immersive Seminar in Virtual Worlds. Honoring Jim Davis

IDIA's faculty, staff, students and campus partners will showcase next generation 3D animation technology as part of a special benefit event. The IDIA will demonstrate 3D laser scanning, motion-capture, and live 3D gaming – all using content created by Jim Davis.

'Traversal for Eindhoven' is a live performance hybrid reality installation that bridges the physical and virtual worlds. It connects Philips NatLab in Eindhoven to a virtual environment as part of the 2009 Dutch Design Week. Avatars will be able to play a physical synthesizer in the Philips NatLab via an interactive online virtual instrument built by IDIA - located near a 3D model of the Eindoven High Tech Campus. The sound of the live synthesizer will be streamed back into Second Life, so the virtual and physical participants can hear their interactions with the instrument.
DUTCH DESIGN WEEK From October 17 through October 25 2009, Eindhoven presents the 8th edition of Dutch Design Week, the largest design event in the Netherlands. Around 1500 designers from home and abroad will show their work in more than 60 locations all over the city of Eindhoven from design disciplines such as industrial design, concept design, graphic design, textile & fashion, spatial design, fooddesign and design management & trends. Visitors will be given insight into the entire development process from concept to product in various disciplines ranging from industrial design to applied arts. HCI Class Solders up some power regulators

IDIA Seminar Brainstorming ideas for using the MS Surface in a Museum context

The IDIA Seminar is working on integrating the Microsoft surface and mobile devices into the experience at the BSU Museum of Art. Brainstorming sessions have focused on ways to navigate the entire collection and relate to works that are on display, and techniques on pushing the information learned out into the museum to augment the experience of the real art works. More information will be forthcoming as the semester goes on.
